Dr. Vathany Kulasingam, Division Head of Clinical Biochemistry at the University Health Network (UHN) and a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, also serves as a Clinician-investigator at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Co-Director of the Clinical Chemistry Postdoctoral Training Program at University of Toronto. Her research applies high-throughout “omics” technologies, including proteomics and metabolomics, to investigate disease mechanisms, particularly in cancer and rheumatic diseases. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and received numerous grants and awards for her contributions to clinical biochemistry, research, and education.

OVERVIEW:

This lecture will provide an overview of the emerging role of mass spectrometry in the detection and characterization of monoclonal proteins, highlighting its clinical advantages over conventional electrophoretic and immunochemical methods. Participants will gain insight into the verification and analytical performance of the EXENT platform implemented at UHN, including its potential impact on patient care and laboratory practice. The session will also review practical considerations for result interpretation and reporting and discuss appropriate clinical indications for requesting mass spectrometry testing. The lecture will help attendees better understand how mass spectrometry can be integrated into the diagnostic and monitoring pathways for plasma cell disorders.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the clinical value of mass spectrometry-based methods for detecting and characterizing monoclonal proteins.
2. Present verication and performance results of the EXENT platform at UHN.
3. Outline guidelines for result reporting and appropriate indications for requesting mass spectrometry.
