Anemia in Hospitalized Patients: Vampirism and Other Tales
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- review the high prevalence of anemia in hospitalized patients
- discuss the effects of anemia on clinical outcomes
- discuss laboratory testing as an identifiable cause of blood loss
- present the results of a pragmatic stepped wedge cluster randomized trial designed to reduce blood loss from laboratory testing and RBC transfusion in critically ill patients.
Dr. Deborah Siegal MD MSc FRCPC is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She holds MSc degrees in Pharmacology and Health Research Methodology. Her primary research interests include (i) management of anticoagulant-related bleeding, (ii) restarting anticoagulants after bleeding, (iii) perioperative management of anticoagulation for urgent surgery, and (iv) ischemic stroke in patients with cancer. Her research is funded by CIHR, CanVECTOR/Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the American Society of Hematology. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles (h-index 35).
