Laboratory Considerations for Disaster Response Testing: Lessons Learned and Preparing for the Next Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the important role of laboratory medicine for emergency or disaster response testing. In the last 20 years, natural disasters, pandemics, and social unrest have forced healthcare facilities to develop contingency plans. Laboratorians play a central role in planning with many of these scenarios requiring varying degrees of medical testing including sometimes unconventional diagnostic demands. This presentation will provide an overview of current and past disasters and how laboratory testing was employed. We will discuss best practices and future directions to aid laboratory professionals in planning for the next crisis. | |
At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) describe different medical testing modalities used for disaster testing 2) compare testing strategies and best practices for different disaster scenarios 3) describe future directions for disaster response testing |

Dr. Tran is Professor and Senior Director of Clinical Pathology at UC Davis Health with expertise in clinical chemistry, toxicology, molecular infectious disease diagnostics, and point-of-care testing. He completed a PhD degree in Comparative Pathology in 2008. His focus during graduate school and postdoctoral training from 2009-2011 revolved around the development of molecular infectious disease tests under the NIH/NIBIB Point-of-Care Technologies Research Network – which would ultimately come into play in 2020 while serving as the main architect of the UC Davis Health COVID-19 testing strategy against COVID-19. | Speaker:
