The use of opioids is a rising concern throughout medicine and public health.  This presentation will focus on the trends seen with respect to opioid use, the circumstances that allowed fentanyl to rise in popularity and missed opportunities to curb opioid abuse.  We will touch on the neurobiologic basis of addiction and the chronicity of substance use disorders.  In addition, laboratory techniques will be summarized in relation to the information those tests provide and how test results are used in the management of patients using opioids.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

1)  summarize laboratory techniques related to opioid detection;
2)  describe the relationship between laboratory test results and patient management;
3)  describe the epidemiology of opioid overdose in Alberta;
4)  understand the basic neurobiology of addiction and the chronicity of substance use disorders;
5)  name the public health interventions proven to decrease opioid overdose death.
