Speaker: Dr. Peter Kavsak is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University and a clinical biochemist with the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program. Internationally recognized for his expertise in cardiac biomarkers and laboratory medicine, his research has significantly advanced the clinical use of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin testing for the diagnosis and management of myocardial infarction. Dr. Kavsak has authored more than 240 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to national and international guidance documents in cardiovascular diagnostics. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, the AACC Academy, and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. In this CSCC educational roundtable/webinar, Dr. Kavsak will discuss analytical precision challenges of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays at the female 99th percentile and the implications for equitable and accurate patient care, drawing on findings from the CODE-MI Trial.
Overview: The presentation will outline important findings from an analytical sub-study that was performed within the CODE-MI trial. The CODE-MI trial [hs-cTn – Optimizing the Diagnosis of Acute Myocardial Infarction/Injury in Women (CODE-MI)] was a multicenter, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized trial that occurred across Canada from 2020 to 2025 (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT03819894) with the analytical sub-study occurring midway through the trial.  New quality parameters established for the high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays will be discussed and the presentation will highlight how collaboration with emergency medicine, cardiology and laboratory medicine can lead to novel approaches when using these assays.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Define quality parameters that can be used for high-sensitivity cardiac troponin
2. List different analytical criteria that can be used with high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays in the emergency setting and identify pros and cons with the listed criteria.
