Speakers:

Dr Hossein Sadrzadeh received his MS in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and his PhD in Pathobiology at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He completed his fellowship training in clinical chemistry from University of Washington in Seattle. He is board certified clinical chemist from ABCC and NRCC and is a fellow of ADLM. He practiced as an academic clinical biochemist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, University of Arizona in Tucson, University of Washington in Seattle, Cedars’ Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and University of Calgary in Calgary Canada. Dr Sadrzadeh had active research labs funded by NIH and other government and private organizations at Harvard, University of Arizona and University of Washington, with laboratory scientist, research techs, undergraduate, graduate and postdocs. He has trained greater than 70 graduate students and fellows in the field of clinical chemistry, most of them practice clinical chemistry in North America and overseas. He is now semi retired in Seattle Washington.

Overview:

This lecture will describe the experience of the speaker as a clinical chemist at different institutions in the USA and Canada. It begins with short background about the speaker including the culture in which he spent the first decades of his life and his academic and clinical appointments. The main focus will be to provide suggestions, based on the speaker’s experience, to clinical chemistry fellows in training programs, as well as junior and young clinical chemists in academic and clinical environments on how to build and maintain a successful, thriving and enjoyable career in both clinical and academic environments.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

1) Discuss the rewards and challenges of an academic clinical chemist

2) Learn how to deal with challenges in a clinical laboratory

3) Learn how to survive and thrive in an academic clinical environment
