Raymond Lepage received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1973 (U. de Montréal) . He worked or directed thereafter multiple hospital and private laboratories. He was active in teaching in four different universities , authored or coauthored over 150 published manuscripts and abstracts and was on numerous meeting organization committees . He is a member of the CSCC since 1978 (president 2007-2008). He was very active in developing the first university based post – doctoral training program in clinical biochemistry in Quebec (1990) . After retiring from the public sector in 2008, he joined a private laboratory and developed an expertise in Drug testing. He is now almost completely retired from the field and h as kept only a part time activity as Scientific Writer.
Overview:
Clinical chemistry l ab oratories are in apparent constant evolution. This presentation will start with a description of a typical routine lab in a general hospital in the 1970’s as seen from an untrained clinical chemist. This will be followed by the description of some technical, ethical and organisational problems in biochemistry profiles, immunoassays, particularly of early parathyroid hormone measurements. A description of a homebrew assay for glucose measurement on filter paper and the development of quality control of POCT glucose measurements will complete the presentation. At the end of the presentation, the author will comment on the evolution of clinical chemistry over a period of nearly fifty years.
Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate some progress of clinical laboratory medicine over a period of fifty years.
- Develop a reflection of their role in a continuously changing environment.
