Dr. Joshua Buse attended  the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Doctorate in Pharmacy. He subsequently completed a fellowship in structural proteomics at the University of Calgary before gaining employment with Calgary Laboratory Services as a Laboratory Scientist. He completed the University of Calgary’s Clinical Biochemistry Fellowship before joining the Saskatchewan Health Authority. During this time, his oversight has included various portfolios at both of Regina’s tertiary care hospitals and the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory as well as fulfilling leadership roles of Regina Biochemistry lead, Provincial Clinical lead for Pre-analytics, and Provincial Clinical Co-lead for biochemistry. He has been a contributor on several Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation grants.

OVERVIEW:

Procalcitonin (PCT) rises markedly in systemic bacterial infections that remain low in viral infections and noninfectious inflammation. Procalcitonin’s marked rise and half-life of 20-24 hours can contribute to the identification of both bacterial sepsis as well as its resolution, making it useful for antimicrobial stewardship. Availability of procalcitonin to intensivists at Regina General Hospital relied heavily on collaboration between members of antimicrobial stewardship committees and operational leadership to match clinical need with departmental resources. Similarly, expansion of procalcitonin availability beyond the intensive care units used a similar approach to balance improved patient care with test utilization.

2. Describe the process of procalcitonin implementation at Regina General Hospital.
3. Apply the implementation approach of procalcitonin at audience members’ local sites.
