| Title: | Mapping the Landscape: A National Survey of Kidney Disease Testing Practices in Canada |
| Speaker: | Dr. Rajeevan Selvaratnam is a clinical biochemist at the University Health Network and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto where he once earned his undergraduate degree. He has a PhD from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario Canada and subsequently completed a clinical chemistry fellowship at the University of Minnesota. This led to a stint as a practicing clinical chemist in a large community hospital setting, but given his knack and affinity for academia, Dr. Selvaratnam returned to his hometown for appointment as an academic clinical biochemist at the University Health Network. Currently, Dr. Selvaratnam is the chair of the Working Group on Kidney Disease for CSCC and represents Canada as an active member of the Committee on Kidney Disease for the International Federation on Clinical Chemistry (IFCC). |
| Overview: | Kidney disease represents a significant health challenge both nationally and globally, with laboratory diagnostics playing a foundational role in early detection and ongoing management of the condition. This presentation will focus on the results of the first national survey conducted across Canada that examined how routine kidney disease testing is utilized and reported. Key findings will include the observed variations in testing and reporting practices, as well as examples of harmonized approaches. Furthermore, these results will be discussed in relation to current recommendations and guidance from professional organizations. |
| Learning Objectives: | At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Understand the variations that exist across Canada, or within its provinces and territories, in the reporting and utilization of tests related to albuminuria, measured creatinine clearance, and glomerular filtration rate. 2) Describe best practice recommendations for routine kidney disease testing, as recommended by international guidelines. |
