Speaker:
Dr. Janet Simons. Medical Biochemist. Providence Health Care, BC.
Following my Bachelor’s of Science in Honours Biochemistry from the University of Waterloo, I completed my medical school, residency training in Internal Medicine, and fellowship in Medical Biochemistry at McMaster University. After my fellowship, I moved to Vancouver to join the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at St. Paul’s Hospital.
In addition to my laboratory practice, I continue to enjoy clinical work in Internal Medicine. I am particularly interested in helping both the clinical services and the laboratory increase efficiency by improving communication and achieving better mutual understanding. I am a strong advocate for appropriate test utilization and high-value care. I currently serve as co-chair for the national Using Labs Wisely collaborative from Choosing Wisely Canada.
Overview:
An overview of the national Using Labs Wisely initiative, of which many CSCC members are already participants. Followed by a discussion of the next steps that labs may take if they are already engaged in resource utilization initiatives, including new lab test targets and approaches.
Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss common barriers to lab-lead utilization initiatives
- Identify potential new targets for quality improvement
