In response to the ongoing need for public awareness and engagement in the field of clinical biochemistry, the CSCC Executive is proposing creation of a new Division within Council. The Division of Public Outreach and Communications (POAC) will be responsible for all aspects of public outreach related to the field of clinical biochemistry including identifying, recognizing, and initiating effective avenues for engaging the public in the profession and demonstrating the value of clinical biochemistry in the health care system. Under this new division, the POAC Division Head will be responsible for the following:

  1. Develop and support a public engagement strategy
  2. Develop and support a process for response to events in the public eye (e.g. news stories)
  3. Build media relationships
  4. Production and dissemination of material used to educate the public on the importance of laboratory medicine and clinical biochemistry in the provision of high quality health care
  5. Act as point of contact for external organizations (e.g. Choosing Wisely and LabCanDx) and to liaise as needed with other CSCC divisions
  6. Content generation and maintenance of the public outreach components of the CSCC website
  7. Provide support with community organizations (e.g. Charity Run, Science Fair)
  8. Oversight of EPOCC Committee, Podcasts, and Website/Blog Working Group

The creation of this new Division has required a change to the bylaws. In addition to the changes to add this new Division, some other items in the bylaws have been updated to be in keeping with the current not-for-profit legislation. The publications section has been removed from the bylaws and will continue to be managed by the Publications Division through the CSCC approved policies and terms of reference.
